IBY TBI.EOH.VPH—PER PRESS ASSOCIATION] CIVIL SERVANTS. CHRISTCHURCH. August 6. Speakers at the annual smoke concert of Canterbury section of the Public Service Association referred to the rumoured reports of retrenchment. The Chairman (B. NY ebb I said they might reasonably look forward to some attempt to reduce salaries, if not retrenchment. Miller (Secretary) said there had been cases in the last fortnight where permanent employees were being discharged. If retrenchment were necessary, they should see the burden fell on those best able to bear it. Representatives of other brandies of the public service urged the necessity for unitv.
