NIGHT \T THE DRILL IT ALL. \y Young Hokitika disported itself at Hie Drill Hall last night in what proved to be a superior edition of + he benefit ball the previous evening in aid of the AYest-land Hospital. Tbe juveniles had a. night out. and a jolly * : me it was The attendance was even su perior in numbers- to that <-f the previous evening while the display of fanci costumes was also oven natter. Mothers and sisters must have had a ousy time preparing their charges for what was a very pretty function, and adults looking on must, have derived much enjoyment witnessing the pleasures of youth enacted before them. As before the whole arrangements for the event were well managed The committee worked bard to make the big function a success, and that, pleasing end lias been achieved in a notable fashion. Success measured financially promises to be very .substantial indeed. Many adults put in a pleasurible evening helping the young folic enjoy themselves and had their reward in the joyful surroundings which marked the progress of the evening. There was » great, wealth of fancy costumes, the occasion specially distinguished for the number and variety of the display. Among those to be noted were: Robinson Crusoe; Rabbit., Frog, Father. Xmas. Rnx-w. Parson. Swagger. Butterfly Scent. Fancy Dancer. Referee (with black eve). T’ierott. Rewpios. Richard Ist.. Wounded Soldier. Fairies. Cupids, Snilois, Follies. Rosebud. Baby. Japanese Page, Indians Night. Jockey. Order of the Bath, Cow Girl, Baggy breeches. Butterfly. Quaker. Irish Washerwoman, Nigger. Looking Backwards. Flower Girl, Topsv Carnival. Cricketer. Chin-mien. Early Victorian. T,a France. Card Flayer. The Ti'irst American. Butcher, Alphabet. Spanish Dancer, Nurse, Bat. Grannies. Knitting Rags. Cow Roys. Swallows. King of the Fairies, Food Control. Ragtime. Soldiers, Scotch. Merry-Go-Round. Gollywog. Black Cat. and others unknown. The judging was more liffietilt than the previous evening, and she Committee: Mlatron Little. Mqsdamos Buchanan. and Butler and Dr. Buchanan had no light task before them. The awards were: Girls- Ist Helen Stavelev. “Farly Victorian.” 2nd. Joyce Pa rich ill. “Rosebud”; most’ original, M. McDonald “Knitting Bag” Bovs. Ist., Willie AA T allace. “Richard 1st”; 9 n d \lfi o Keller “Wounded Soldier” ; "most original. AY. Keen. ‘Hooking Backward.” Despite the weather conditions, the Committee had a very large Family to cater-for. The juveniles vpiv taken to the supper room in hatches, and their wants supplied, \fterwards the unlocking adults were entered for. Dancing was kept gotng till about II o’clock for the young folk, after which an hour was set aside for Hie adults, and a very enjoyable time was spent. The gathering was a great -ureess from ■ every point of view reflecting the fullest credit on all concerned with the i management.
