Replying to a question in the Commons, Mitchell Thomson stated the Board of Trade was crffTsidering a very substantial reduction in the estimates for headquarters staff and overseas trade department. Although it was officially announced that Lowe would compete m mill singles in the first day matenes, Woosnam participated instead >f him in the first match. No reason for the change was assigned. Lowe defeat'd ILiwK's 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 in the first match mil Anderson defeated Woosna.ni -1-6, 6-2. 6-4, 6-4. Anderson who started weakly in the first sot, being unable to accomodate himself to Woosnani’s fast service warned up rapidly but then came erratic and Woosnatn won the next five games. Anderson won the second set easily. In the fourth set lie won the first two games and lost the third by double faulting by retrieved himself in the two last games.
