On his way out lie overtook the Itev M. Gaetz, who had just visited him. Mr Gneiss seized his arm. Garfield flung him aside and ran away. Garfield’s inithcr, who had visited him with his wife, denounced hs action in escaping. “I’d rather have him meet his Maker on the scaffold than bring this further disgrace on all who have been so good to him,” she declared. Garfield is thought to have got away in a stolen Ford motor-car, which was seen travelling at a high speed through a neighbouring village.
