The world’s middleweight boxing championship title is now in dispute, following an extraordinary, bout between BHyan Downey, of Columbus, and Johnny "Wilson (holder) ot t loveland. It was fought at Cleveland. The Boxing Commission and the sports writers declare that Downey won by a knock-out in the seventh round of a scheduled 12-round no-de-cision bout.
The referee, Jimmy Gardner, however. declared Wilson the winner, on a
Wilson was knocked down three times in the final round. The first time the referee only counted nine, while the time-keeper says that Wilson was on the floor for Iff seconds. The second time Wilson was down the referee again counted nine, whereas the timekeeper says Wilson was out for 11 seconds.
When Wilson was floored the third time his manger jumped into the ring and tried to hold him up; but WiV •
fell. Then the referee counted and then he stopped the bout, -av'ir“Downey struck bis opponent when he was down. Then a hundred spectators leaped into the rng and attempted to hit the referee whereupon the Boxing Commission announced Downey wns the winner.
