The Essex team to play the Australians consists of Douglas, Perrin, H. Ashton, C. Ashton, Louden, Dixon, Franklin, Morris, Oilligan, Russell and Freeman.

Perrin won th • toss and sent in Russell and Dixon, facing Gregory and Hendry. The last named accepted a return from Rtlsscdl with three on the hoard. The latter hit four boundaries before Gregory ultimately found his stumps. Perrin was able to rosumf* his innings and remained not out. The Essex innings lasted 21 hours. Hardsley and t oliiiis opened for Australia, both scoring freely off Louden and Dixon. Collins lifted Smith for six, reachiitg his 50 in an hour. The century was posted immediately afterwards, and Bardsley then succumbed in Franklin's first over. He hit eight fours'in his total.
