LATE LOCALS.

Private word received in town this morning stated that -Mr Knox Gilmer. of Wellington, had died to-day from ptomaine poisoning. Mrs Gilmer (nee .Miss May Seddori) is also lying seriously ill from the same cause.

There is evidently good money oi winter milking (says the '‘Levin Chronicle’’) For the past months supply from six cows, a local dairyman collected • £32, and the nerd was

only one of ordinary quality. The recommendation' by Dr G. J. iilackmore in a recent lecture at Christchurch, that milk should he sterilised, prompted an inquiry as to the correct way to sterilise milk without detracting from its nutritive properties Dr Rlnckmore replied that one method of sterilising milk it to heat it to 100 deg. Fahr., and maintain this heat for from 15 to 20 minutes. ne thinks the best way is to bring the milk to the boil, anil then allow it to cool.

In his opinion, this does not impair too food value of the milk to any appreL ciable extent, and is much more certain than the former method.
