Clothing Factorv.—Advt. The death of Mr John H. Denton, lather of Mr K. H. Denton, town clerk of Greymouth, took place at Christchurch yesterday morning. He was horn at Potiistine, Yorkshire, England, 71 years ago. Mr Denton was stationed for some time at Greymouth as chief clerk in the Public Works Department and in 1901 was transferred to Christchurch as chief clerk, retiring on superannuation some five or six years ago. Mr Denton who was twice married, leaves a widow, two sons and two daughters, Mr F. 11. Denton of Greymouth, being the eldest son.
A meeting of the Greymouth Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday to discuss matters in connection with the timber industry and proposed alteration to the railway service. A lengthy discussion took place on railway charges for timber and it was resolved to communicate with other chambers, local bodies and timber workers union on the subject. The proposed alterations to the railway timetable were discussed and tlie Mayor, Messrs Tennant and Kettle were appointed as a deputation to interview the Traffic Manager. The deputation was informed that the proposed revision had been held over, with the probability of it being cancelled.
It is known that the Railway Department is considering a number of changes in the train services throughout the Dominion, to come into force at an early date, hut so far no definite announcement lias been made by the Department. An enquiry was made yesterday to the local stationmaster, hut he could give no information as to the changes proposed locally, though it was stated some time ago that the alterations were to come into force on August Ist. There are rumours of con. siderable changes in the running of local trains having been suggested, hut so far we are unable to supply information as to the suggested alterations. The matter is one of considerable interest, and will doubtless have the attention of the several local bodies affect ad.

The brother-in-law of accused, who spoke for him, testified as to his former good character, and pleaded for leniency. The Bench decided to take a lenient view and accused was remanded for six months. In the meantime he must 1m indoors at 7 p.m. and must abstain from civ a rette smoking and attendance at picture shows. In the event of a satisfactory report from the probation office i at the end of that period Hie case wdl be dismissed. Milton William Barlow. charged with stealing from T. Lamason, Stratford, a carpet square, was reman 1ed on the police application, till July 28, when he will appear at. Stratford, It wfto stated that accused had been arrested on Sunday, and several of,lnn charges are pending.,

The dentil is reported from Dunedin of MrA Axelson, wife of Rev. E. A. Axelson. who passed away at her home, 175, George Street, on Saturday evening. The deceased was well-known for her charitable work, among the orphans of the Dunedin, in which sh was assisted by her husband. The ,ate Mr Axelson. was the eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs George Erickson. of Orwell Creek. She leaves a husband and family.
The weekly meeting of the WestCoast Rugby Fnion was held last evening. It was decided in connection with the Boiler team that three referees he submitted. Messrs Trying (Inangnhua). Williams (Grey), and Houston (Hokitika). Captain Cox was appointed oflicialli time-keeper for both Wednesday and .Saturday’s games.
