HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, JULY 22

The Council met at 7.30 p.m. Present Messrs H. M. Coulson (Deputy .Mayor) in tho chair, J. Lloyd, R. F. Perbani, A. Parkhill, F. McGregor and A. G. Pilkington.

Apologies were made for be absence of the Mayor (in Christchurch), Messrs Wood, Blank and King. The minutes were confirmed. MOTION OF CONDOLENCE.

.Mr Coulson said before going on with i lie business lie wished to refer to the loss the town had suffered that day by the death of Mr Joseph Maidl. For a great many years he had been a very energetic and active citizen. He had at all times taken a live and keen interest in the. welfare of the town and district, doing bis utmost to advance its interests. Mr Mandl had joined the Council as far back as 1884 and became Mayor in ISSB, serving in both capacities for a number of years, retiring from the Mayoral office and Council in HMKh and ho had rendered very valuable -civices during that period. He would move— I That the Council place on record its deep regret at tho death of Mr Joseph .Mandl and that a letter be sent

o the family of the deceased expressing ■ lie Council’s deepest sympathy and (indolence in the loss they have susained. and appreciation of his service* is a Councillor, Mayor and citizen.’ Mr F. McGregor seconded the motion, ■xpressing his deep regret at his loss, and appreciation of the great services ho had rendered to the town as a citi-

Mr B. F. Perliam said though a comparatively new arrival to Hokitika, he realised that the town had lost a real good citizen whom it could ill spare, md lie regretted there were not more of his stamp to take up the civic reins. The motion was then put and earned iu silence, Councillors standing. Mr Coulson then moved that the Council adjourn for one week as a mark of respect. —.Seconded by Mr Lloyd and carried. The Council then ro*o.
