This decision was arrived at in the course of a recent conference of the controlling authorities, in consequence of reports from medihul officers respecting the effect of cigar-ette-smoking on the health of the patients, and the decision received the approval of General Sir Donald McGavin (Director of Medical Services) before it was confirmed. Shortly after the earthquake of June ogth it was announced that the .seismograph at Kelburn indicated a .'slight tilt of the earth to the west. Mr J. T. Ward, director of the Wanganui_Observatory, who is at present in Wellington, has informed Dr C. E. Adams, Government Astronomer, that the equatorial telescope at Wanganui was tilted about 2i minutes of are towards the south. This, very roughly, corresponds to a tilt of an inch in one hundred yards at the locality of the telescope. The Kelburn equatorial telescope lias not been sufficiently closely adjusted to show a small tilt north or south', and the one seismograph demonstrates only movements east and west; but Dr Adams states that t'-e level of the transit telescope, whose axis lies horizontally east and west, was observed on June 24th, and ttgaiii on the 29th, and in the interval it had tilted westward 3) seconds of

arc—possibly by a slow movement over a longish period. These movements, as shown at Kelburn, are, of course,, extremely slight, and of no practical eonseqence, except to users of finely-adjust-ed instruments. The interesting feature of the observed tilts here and at Wanganui is that they confirm the deduction that the earthquake originated in the neighbourhood of Oisbone. For Children’s Hacking Cough.
