TO STOP WOMEN SMOKING. SAN FRANCISCO, Juno 2-1. Tf Solomon's scopes of wives had puffed on cigarettes, a Washington correspondent in a late telegram, wonders what the world would l>e f o-day, and he then proceeds to unfold arother addition to contemplated blue laws of America. “If the women of to-day don’t cut out the- wicked weed,” according to Representative Johnson, ol Mississippi, -the world will be in a terrible way some day in the future.” Relieving that the United States Government. has the right under its police powers to safeguard “the health and morals of the people,” Mr J< hnson introduced in the House at Washington, on June 22nd., a Bill to prohibit “female persons” in the district of Columbia from smoking cigarettes in public places. His hill also provided that owners of public restaurants should not permit “females” to smoke. Tke measure proposes that for violations of this proposed law the guilty woman or man, as the case may he, shall bo fined a maximum of 25 dollars for the first offence, and minimum of 100 dollars for the second offence. Paul Rurnev Johnson, the Mississippi representative, who fathers the antiwomen Smoking Bill, is a judge by profession. He is one of the younger members of the House, having just |turned 10 and is serving hi- second [term in Congress. He is married and has three youngsters all under six.
