AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION NO PROGRESS. (Received This Day at 10.15 a.m.) LONDON, July 20. It is. reported that the Do Valera negotiations have broken down. They certainly are not progressing satisfactorily.
.PESSIMISM OVER CONFERENCE LONDON, July 20.
There are dear indications that the Do Valera negotiations are. not proceeding 'satisfactorily. The cheery demeanour of the British Ministers has given place to obvious depression.
It is unofficially stated that the visiting Prime Ministers have been liivited to help to readjust the situntiqii, ollly Smuts agreeing. A Well-informed authority declares that when life lines are being thrown out it may ho taken as a sign that the ship is in danger.
ENGLISH CABINET PROPOSAI LONDON. July 20
Mr Lloyd George to-night submits to Cabinet details of his conversations with Mr do Valera, including his written proposals representing the Government’s basis of terms for a settlement. which, if adopted, will he handed to Mr de Valera to-morrow. There was a protracted Cabinet meeting: this evening, at which the terms that are proposed to be submitted to Mr do Valera - were drawn up. Following the meeting, Mr Lloyd George motored to Buckingham Palace to lay the terms before the King. ColomM Grotton, M.P.. has joined tilt* Independent Unionists, following a similar action by Colonel Archer Shoe M.P., on the ground that they take exception to the Government’s handling of tic Irish question.
DE VALERA HONOURED . LONDON, July 21. Dublin University has unanimously elected Mr De Valera as Chancellor of the University. It is reported that the de Valera negotiations have broken down. Tlie.v certainly are not progressing satisfactorily. Forty of the Unionists in the House of Commons will intervow Mr Chamberlain (Unionist leader) to-day, with a demand for a statement regarding the security of Ulster, also imperial ! supremacy over Ireland, and security for continued Irish liability for the war debts.
