SPRINGBOKS V. TARANAKI
A DRAWN GAME
NEW PLYMOUTH, July 18
Between fourteen and fifteen thousand saw Taranaki draw with the Springboks, neither side scoring in a hard fought and fast game. The ground was soft. Early in the game it was seen that the Springbok forwards were out to feed their backs, but the smothering tactics of Taranaki, coupled with deadly tackling, kept the ball in. There "’as little between the teams in the first spell. Each had a, share of the attacking to find the I opponents’ defence sound. As the result of passing by the Springboks’ backs, Modkel on a couple of occasions was collared right on the comer. King_ ston played a very sound game. The second spell was a tussle between, the vanguards. Taranaki attacked first, then the Springboks had a turn. Some pretty passing was witnessed. Several times tip. Springboks' were right on Taranaki’s line, but Kingston saved time and again. Just on call of time. Clarkson, who played a great game for Springboks slipped and fell when the way across the line appeared to lie open.
