CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.

The Canterbury Education Board met at Christchurch on Friday. Present — Mr E. 11. Andrews (chairman), Hon J. Grinnnond, M.L.C., and Messrs W. A. Banks, 11. ,J. Bigholl. G. IV. Armituge, J. Gow, -J. Jamieson, C. S. Thompson, A. Rev will, T. Hughes and \V. P. -Spencer. Appointments made included —Oroy-iiioutli,-Mrs D. Farnell, assistant mistress. Leave of absence was granted Mr A. Seebeck, assistant master at. Hokitika, a month; Miss J. Crowley, sole teacher, Stillwater, 3 weeks; Mrs A. O'Brien, assistant mistress, Cobclen, 2 months I without salary, in order to enable her to visit Australia. Mr White (Truant Officer) reported having issued 33 ordinary notices and 4 of a final nature ; in 3 eases in regard to which final notices had previously been issued, good improvement had been shown. AGRICULTURE AND TECHNICAL. The Agriculture and Manual and Technical Committee reported that a letter had been received from the Department in regard to the election and appointment of managers of technical schools for 1921-22, and detailing the number to her elected by each local body, it had been recommended that the elecion should hh held during August; the board's representative would he elected at next meeting. In reply to a letter From the South bridge School Committee asking that the manual training building should he extended to include a cookery room, it was decided to state I that- the board did not approve of erecting any more buildings at Southhridge until ihe question of sites had been definitely settled. The Ellesmere reclini;il Association had been informed that -.lie hoard saw no objection to the ereeiion of a technical room on a section in Lees ton owned by the County Council if flic Department approved. As the Department had ruled that the High School Board did not control technical classes at Rangiora as from the beginning of the year. it- was recommended that the supervisor should confer with the secretary of the High School Board with a view lo making an adjustment of accounts for operations carried on this

year. The following were the results ol the West Coast potato competition: Hari Ilari, 11 Oj points. £2. 1 ; Hatter’s. 101 points, £l 10s. 2: Aliaura and Barrvtowii, 9(1 points. £1 each, 3. The report was adopted. BUILDINGS COMMITTEE. Arahura Road—The teacher’s application for the erection of a double brief chimney at the residence was granted. Bruce. Bay—The Committee applied for a grant for :i shelter shed and offered to find labour and some material. It was agreed to grant material to the value of £lO, the Foreman to approve of the plan of the shed. Cobden—The Committee asked tor definite instructions regarding clearing of I lie now school site. Ii was resolved to state that the Committee was expected to keep the ground in order until it vas required for building purposes, and that it- could ho let on a short tenancy if desired. Kniatn.—-The Department having again declined to sanction the erection of a school building it was decided to make further representations. Kanieri. —lt was resolved to state in reply to tin' Department’s enquiry that ihere were no old buildings on the Coast that could he utilized in the rebuilding of the school. Mananui—ln reply to the Committee's application for assistance in erecting a shelter shed, ij was resolved to oiler the roofing material, the timber being contributed locally. Ta.vlorville. —Repairs to spouting, new gates and other small repairs were autlioriized. Waitaha.—Applications for the removal of the partition in the residence and for a grant for preparation of a drilling ground were refused. The Foreman’s report for the month was received and adopted. INSPECTOR’S REPORTS. Inspector’s reports on various West Coast schools were as follows: — Ruatapu, very fair; Riinu Catholic, very fair; Kanieri Catholic, very fair; Woodstock, very fair to good ; Kanieri, very fair to good; Hokitika Catholic, good ; Stafford, very fair; Westbrook, moderate; Kuimvra Catholic, very fair; Wainihinihi, very fair; Goldsborougli, fair. An application from the Workers Educational Association for financial support, was received and met "’ith much sympathy, but no monetary vote was forthcoming. Mr G. W . Annitage supported the request and moved that a grant of £25 should lie made, Mr J. Jamieson seconding the motion. The Hon J. Grinnnond, after inquiring into the hoard’s financial position, suggested that the grant should ho reduced to £lO, and this - was agreed to by the mover, and seconder. . Messrs A. I’cvetiil and C. S. Thompson opposed the motion on the grounds that- while the hoard was entirely sympathetic it had no lands available for the purpose. Eventually the original motion was withdrawn, and mi the motion of Mr Thompson it was decided to reply regretting that the hoard had insufficient funds at present from which to make a grant, but when the position improved it would he pleased to reconsider the matter. SCHOOL OF FORESTRY.

Mr P. R. Climie, the Canterbury Progress League’s organiser, wrote in-viting-members to take part in a deputation to. the Acting Prime Minister on July LG, to urge that the Dominion School of Forestry should be established in connection with Canterbury College. Mr CL W. Annitage moved that the hoard heartily endorse tlie league’s circular and do all in its power to assist in bringing pressure-on the Government to 'have the Dominion School of Forestry established in connection with Canterbury College.

Mr W. A. Banks seconded the motion. He expressed to opinion that the strongest possible stops should be taken in order that the School of forestry should bo established in Canterbury. The deputation to Sir Francis Bell could not be too strong and in his opinion the chairman and every available member should join in the deputation. He would be attending on behalf of the Farmers’ Union and he hoped other members would make a special effort to be present. The claims of Canterbury for the school were so apparent that as far as he could see Auckland, which was

now making such a big fuss, had no claim at alb The Hon J. Grimmond also expressed his hearty support of the proposals. Tlie hoard decided to reply to he league stating that it thoroughly endorsed the views contained in the letter regarding the establishment of a School of Forestry at Canterbury College. and staling that the board would lie represented at the deputation to Sir Francis Bell by the chairman and other members. It was also resolved to send a- separate letter to Sir Francis Bell expressing the views of the board on tlie matter.
