Diphtheria.

POSITION IN OTAGO. DUNEDIN, July 7 The notifications of cases of diphtheria are now coining in more slowly to the office of the Otago health district, and it may he considered that the disease is finishing off for the winter. Only two deaths from diphtheria have occurred in the Otago health district (which includes Southland) during the present outbreak, and one death from a combined attack of appendicitis and diphtheria. One of the deaths took place at Lauder and two in Dunedin. For the mouth of June forty-eight cases of diphtheria were notified, no fewer that forty-three of the total being in Otago proper. A comparison shows that the outbreak was worse than last

year. IN CANTERBURY. CHRISTCHURCH, July 9. The number of cases of diphtheria in the city area is decreasing; no case in that area was reported on Friday, although one at Lyttelton and one at Okain’s Bay were notified. For the six months ended June 30th, .1921, the total increase of cases'of diphtheria reported in the Canterbury Health District (including Westland, Grey, and Duller) was, as compared with the corresponding period of 1920, only 47. Of the 47 tlie re were 20 carriers, and in addition there wore cases reported as diphtheria, which proved eventually not to he diphtheria.
