|BV TELEGRAPH—PER PRESS ASSOCIATION J FIRE IN a SCHOOL. DUNEDIN, July 10. About 8.30 a.m. on Saturday night a fire was discovered in one of the classrooms of the Alosgiel District High School. It was however, suppressed before any considerable damage was done. Incendiarism is suspected. The police arc investigating.
CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL. CHRISTCHURCH, July 0. Two nominations have been received
for the vacancy on the Christchurch City Council caused by the resignation of C. P. Agar, subsequent to his conflict with the Mayor (Dr. Thacker) at a recent Council meeting. Air Agar who has been renominated, will lie opposed by Mr R. D. Martin, who will stand as an Independent Labourite, his candidature not having secured the endorsement of the Labour representation Committee which was averse to contesting the seat. Mr Martin, however, states that should the Committee decide to oppose Mr Agar, lie will with draw and thus prevent a three cornered contest. The election will take place next Thursday..

Richard Evans aged 78, a wed ■ nown Kaiapoi resident, was run ov."' ny a train at Kaiapoi this morning, both legs being severely injured. He died a few' hours Inter. He took a prominent part in local affairs, and was Chairman of Wainmkariri Harlxmr Board and was associated with other bodies.
