In the Ligouri case the defence was opeiud. Counsel for the defence submitted a telegram from the Inspector General of Police to the Inspector in barge of Wagga district, asking had Liguuri been located, and whether arrangements could be made for medically examining her, with a view to ascertaining her sanity. Bishop Dwyer called, detailed the duties of a Bishop regarding communities sisters, stating part of the duties was to see that any nun wishing to leave the eommfmity was returned safely and in a decent manner to her relatives or friends. He recapitulated three questions be put to Ligouri during an episcopal visit, when she stated she was perfectly satisfied, adding that she gave no indication of dissatisfaction or unhappiness. Witness also stated that when inquiring of Ligouri’s whereabouts he bad been told tliat Doctor Tive.v had offered to take her into hi* establishment as a maid. He added that bis idea in giving the information for her arrest was to ascertain her mental condition. If she were declared sane, bis duty ceased. If she were found insane lie bad to provide for her treatment until cured. Bishop Dwyer added that sometimes left the Convents and returned to their homes, in which case they were provided with sufficient means.
