Quite a number of charges were heard at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning arising out of' alleged breaches of the Stamp Act in connection with moneys paid out by the Westland County Council. The payments were for work done in connection with ferry services and read and repair works.After hearing the various c.larges his Worship withheld fixing penalties in these caws where convictions were entered up. until this morning.
Despite the timber slump now- prevailing in addition to the Diggers sawmill at Back Creek just started, the first of the Zimuu syndicate oi sawmills w ill l>o starting almost immediately to cut timber. This mill is situated on AYard Road, off Lake Kanieri road. The same syndicate is about to set up a second mill on Bruce road, Kanieri Forks; the plant for the purpose to he moved from Humphreys. Ju the hear future there will be four hew sawmills cutting from areas adjacent to Lake Kanieri road.

One of those amusing incidents which sometimes relieve the tedium of Court proceedings occurred at the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court. A French seaman appeared on a charge ot drunkenness. As the man apparently knew no English. and there was no interpreter available, the Court officials were in a quandary. They could, not proceed with the case until the man had had the nature of the carge explained to him, and been given an opportunity of pleading. After some delay ft Court official ventured a. little French. “You* avez huvais yesterday?” he enquired tentativelv. Tim prisoner was plainly puzzled. The official tried again, “lls dit von avez huvais yesterday? h ( > said. The Frenchman was still puzzled. Thereupon a police constable, with a suspicion of an Hibernian accent, interjected with “Hev! Henri was von drunk yesterday?” “Oiu exclaimed, smiling amiably. “A or dronk.” Amid the laughter which followed he was convicted and discharged.
