CANTERBURY PROGRESS LEAGUE
CHRISTCHURCH, July 6
At a meeting of the Canterbury Progress League to-night, it was decided to establish a Central Committee to consider the question of unemployment, and to formulate a scheme for meeting the difficulty, the committee to consist of representatives from the Progress League, the Employers’ Association, the Labour and Repatriation Departments, the Trades Council, the R.S.A., the Industrial Association, the Farmers’ Union, and the Sheepowners’ Union. AN ESSAY COMPETITION. CHRISTCHURCH, July 6. Following are the awards in Mr H. F. Wigram’s essay competition on: “The use of Aviation in the Defence of New Zealand” —Captain W. Ivory, Kelburn, Wellington, first; Captain W. Bell, late Captain, R.A.F., Waitotara, second; G. A. Hutchison, Wellington, third. LEAGUE FOOTBALL. AUCKLAND, July 7 Tlie management committee of the Auckland Rugby League decided to inform the New Zealand League that in view of prior arrangements, the match (Australia, v. Auckland) could not he played on July 16. It was decided to send a team oil tour this season to play Wellington, Christchurch, and Grevmouth. The following is a tentative itinerary of tlie tour—versus Christchurch on August 27, Greymonth, August 31, Wellington, September 3. It was agreed the team will not include any qf the Auckland players who visited Australia with the New Zealand team.
