Zingari, on the Carisbrook Ground on Saturday. Two sons of deceased, Southern players, were taking part in the game, ■ which was abandoned. Dr Linden gave a certificate that death was due to heart ■disease. SEAMEN’S APPEAL. ECHO OF JOCKEYS’ DISPUTE. AUCKLAND, July 4. The Arbitration Court to-day reserved its decision in the appeal by W. Tighe against his conviction for being a party to an alleged strike on the Mokoia at Lyttelton on July 12th., 1920, when, as an outcome of the jockey’s dispute, the crew refused to sail with Sir George Clifford. The appellant’s counsel contended that it never had been .proved that Tighe was a, member of the watch involved when the deputation informed the captain that, they would not sail. If he were, the utmost that could be said was that there was a threat to discontinue work. If the Legislature intended a threat to strike to be' an offence, it. wuold have expressed that intention fn exact terms. The conviction of 22 others hinges on the appeal. j FURTHER PARTICULARS, j WELLINGTON, July This afternoon the Court of Appeal continued the hearing of the case in which Ward and Co., Brewers of Christ church, claim exemption from income tax of money expended by them in connection with the licensing poll in April 1919. Mr MacGregor. Solicitor-General j for the Commissioner of Taxes, njain- ■ tained that the expenditure was not I wholly and exclusively incurred in I earning income for the year on which I tile assessment was based and was ! therefore liable to taxation. This expenditure, he said, was purely a capital , one to obtain .protection against a future change in the law, which would destroy the company’s business. The influencing of electors was no part of tiic business of brewing or selling beer. After Air Blair replied, the Court reserved its decision. MINER’S HOUSING. WELLINGTON, July 5 A further reply to Mr Arbuekle (Secretary of the Miners’ Federation), lias been issued by Mr Bishop, the Act-ing-Secretary of the Aline Owners’ Association. Referring to the quest ion of the lack of accommodation for the miners on the Coast, the reply states that to-day there are 2o more men employed at Blackball than on Afay 1. All these men, it is stated, are accommodated, and there are still several empty cottages in the town. 1
