Edwin John Knox, while working at the oversea steamer Port Napier, at Port Chalmers yesterday evening, sustained fatal injuries to bis bead through a carcase of frozen mutton falling from a sling. COURT OF APPEAL. WELLINGTON, July I. The Court of Appeal was occupied this morning hearing an argument in case stated by the Commissioner of Taxes. The case arose out of a claim by Ward and Coy., Ltd., brewers of Christchurch, that the sum of £2.123/ 3/11 expended hv the Company in fighting the 1919 licensing poll, should be exempt from income tax. The Coy based the- claim to the exemption on the ground that the expenditure was a legitimate and necessary expenditure to protect the Coy’s revenue and enable it to continue its business, and that the expenditure was exclusively inclined in tlie production of aeeessahle Income, the subject of assessment.

At the hearing this morning. Mr Blair and with him Air Cook, appeared for the Coy., and Mr W. C. MacGregor. K. 0.. Solicitor-General for the Commissioner of Taxes. Mr Blair for Ward and Co.'.
