We are firmly of opinion that if New Zealand people will resolve to live within their means, if the Government will set an example by reducing the public expenditure, the unfavourable balance of trade that has now to he deplored will gradually change to a favourable balance, and the financial stringency will prove to be only a phase'. The change cannot, in the nature of tilings, be. sudden, hut all the essentials exist for bringing it about through the combined will and good sense of the community.—Lyttelton Times.
