M'AT KUNA !. MOIJTA MTV. REPLY TO l)R VALINTJNK’R comments. WELLINGTON. Juno 27. Regarding T)r Valintine’s comments on tile cause of the Illicit maternal mortality in New Zealand, a prominent Wellington practitioner stated that it uas hardly fair to put the whole responsibility on the medical man. The Health Department should ascertain the proportion of cases attended in the first place by midwifes only. Many midwives only called in a doctor when difficulties arose, and that might account to some extent for the groat mortality, also for the fact that there was want of frankness in letting the Department know of such cases in the early stages. Midwifery ought to he carried on bv men doing nothing else. The public had come to expect a doctor to he an all-round man, good in every branch of the profession. In the cities specialisation was hotter for the public le would he interesting to know the proportion of midwifery cases when properly sterilised rubber gloves were used. Romo practitioners still do not believe in them, hut personally he thought their use ought to he made compulsory. Hands could not he boiled, hut rubber gloves could, and, if boiled between cases, there would not he much chance of carrying infection from one ease to another.
