AN EARTHQUAKE.
A SHARP SHOCK. A sharp shock of earthquake was experienced this morning about 1.40 o’clock. The shake was the severest experienced for many years and lasted for several seconds. The direction appeared to he south-east to north-west. AT GREYMOUTH. This morning about ten minutes to two o’clock f.'reymoulh was shaken by an earthquake of it pronounced and fairly durable character. The direction of the shock appeared t<> be from nor’cast to south-west, and the tremors lasted for over 20 seconds in the first instance, and there was it further slight quake it minute later. A sharp earthquake of several seconds duration, was experienced at 1.32 this morning. Beyond bricks being dislodged from several chimneys, no damage is reported. OA.MARU, June 29. A sharp earthquake was felt here about 1.30 this morning. DUNEDIN, June 29 An earlhqttiikt tremor lasting it few s.'c mds. v. as 'hit here at 1.30. No damage is reported. WELLINGTON, June 29. Reports from all parts of the Dominion record an earthquake of exceptional severity this morning. At Hastings the .earthquake lasting seventylive seconds, was felt at 1.30. Several chimneys are down and plate shop windows smashed ml crockery and bottles in shops and hotels broken, but no serious damage is reported. Women became hysterical and people rushed into the streets in their night attire. At Napier there was a severe earthquake lasting sixty seconds experienced at 1.30 morning. Buildings swayed to an alarming degrees the scared residents rushing into the open.
