A SHARP SHOCK. A sharp shock of earthquake was experienced this morning about 1.40 o’clock. The shake was the severest experienced for many years and lasted for several seconds. The direction appeared to he south-east to north-west. AT GREYMOUTH. This morning about ten minutes to two o’clock f.'reymoulh was shaken by an earthquake of it pronounced and fairly durable character. Reports from all parts of the Dominion record an earthquake of exceptional severity this morning. At Hastings the .earthquake lasting seventylive seconds, was felt at 1.30. Several chimneys are down and plate shop windows smashed ml crockery and bottles in shops and hotels broken, but no serious damage is reported. Women became hysterical and people rushed into the streets in their night attire. At Napier there was a severe earthquake lasting sixty seconds experienced at 1.30 morning. Buildings swayed to an alarming degrees the scared residents rushing into the open.
