Diphtheric Scourge
RAMPANT IN CHRISTCHURCH. [HV TEI.ECItAVII - PER I’RESS ASSOCIATION’] CHRISTCHURCH, June 26. A deputation, representing local bodies and health authorities, waited oa Mr l’nrr and asked for Government assistance towards the appointment of a commission ol experts to investigate the causes of the present epidemic of diphtheria here. Mr Parr, in reply, sard that all over the world in recent years there had been a marked increase in diphtheria, lie claimed that in 1918 in the Dominion the condition of tilings was worse than it is to-day. Since then there had been a decrease, but in Christchurch that has not been the case. He said that what was wanted was information about the disease. So far as his department was concerned it was out to help them all it could. He had given instructions that an expert bacteriologist should come from Dunedin to assist Dr. Pearson. Two extra inspectors of health would he put on in Christchurch. The Minister said that the deputation’s idea of a commission on the matter would have to he brought before the Cabinet*. He was satisfied that tho state of the schools was not the main factor. The over-crowding in Christchurch was not as ;vd as in Wellington,
