The annual meeting of the "Westland Acclimatisation Society will be held at the County Chambers at < .30 o’clock on Monday evening. We regret to record the death of an old and respected resident of Arthurstown in the person of Mrs Caroline Burke whiqh took place this morning. The-deceased had reached the advanced age of 93 years and for the last ten years had been confined to her room. She leaves a, son (Mr August Burke of Arthurstown) and two daughters (Mrs Wrobleski of Arthurstown and Mrs G. ißergmanii of Kanieri) to mourn their loss.

Instances of cargo pillaging continue to be reported, and frequently the loss involved is serious. A Wellington firm has just lost over £SOO worth of goods, all from one case. When the case was opened up there, the £SOO worth of goods originally consigned were missing, and in their place was a bag of sand, of exactly the same gross weight as the goods that were ordered. The month y meeting of the Hokitika Beautifying Association takes place on Tuesday next at 7 o’clock.

An effort is to be made in the near future to have the municipal swimming baths restored to usefulness in time for next season. Particulars in regard to cost of repairs and in reference to the installation of an electric pumping plant, are now being ascertained, and when the information is available a local committee will be organised to wait upon tbe Borough Council in regard to ways and means to give effect to the desire of the community.
