When Counsel for, the defence was addressing tile jury yesterday afternoon referring to the action of tlie plaintiff who in writing acceptance of the offer of sale of the output, asked for confirmation, to which the defendant had added a proviso, Counsel stated plaintiff •• had invited confirmation but in doing so he threw a boomerang which came back on him. The point Counsel wished to make was that the proviso contained a condition that upset the whole calculations of plaintiff as to the alleged contract.

At Addington stock sales on Wednesday there was a medium entry of fat pigs, but the demand was not too keen. A letter was received at the meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Christchurch, from the Minister of Internal Affairs in acknowledgment of the Society’s protest against allowing the use of ordinary rabbit traps for catching opossums. The Minister explained that traps with teeth or the ordinary rabbit traps, could only be used during the present month. The American jump trap was similar to the ordinary rabbit trap with the exception that it was toothless. Experiments were being made with a ' iew to ascertaining which kind of trap was the least cruel. The Minister added that he was entirely in sympathy with the Society’s objects, and would do all n his power to prevent any unneceslary cruelty being inflicted on oposiums.

The usual weekly Euchre Tournament took place at St. Mary’s Club Rooms on Wednesday evening last. A good number of tables were filled. The ladies first prize went to Mrs J. Lynch and the second to Miss Matson. The Gents prizes were won by Mr G. Lakin and Mr W. Stickles. After supper the floor was given over to dancing, the music being supplied by Miss A. Reid, the floor being in charge of Mr Stuart. Heavy traffic on the County roads during the winter months is causing considerable wear and tear, and the local body is being faced with a largeexpense where the traffic is operating, in the upkeep of the roads. It is not unlikely that the County Council will have to review the position either by enforcing the by-law which restricts i;:e traffic in the mid-winter, or of imposing a substantial license fee.

Mr T. E. Y. Seddon, M.P., has notified the Westland County Council that the Minister of Public- Works advises that authority to expend £6OO on repairs to the Ivanieri bridge has been issued, and the work is to begin as sooii as the necessary material can be obtained. It is hoped to start the work within a week’s time. The repair party will camp near the work, where huts for ‘accommodation are to be erected. The worst parts of the structure will be <.v< i-liauled in order of urgency, and u.«- officers of the Public Works Department "ill maintain traffic to the best advantage. Some heavy heart of red pine is to be put in for new stringers in places, and when this particular work is in hand, traffic over the bridge will be subject to interruption. The death was announced yesterday of Mr Donald Chisholm, a very old resident of the Kumara district, and who for some considerable time-had been an inmate of the Old Peoples’ Home at Kuinara. The deceased was over 88 years of age. He had resided in the Dillmanstown district of Kumara for many years, having in the bright days of that locality been a successful miner. For some considerable time be bad been in failing health, but being of good constitution lie held on tenaciously to life, old age finally carrying him off. He was well and favourably known about Kumara, where he had lived for so long an honest and upright citizen of the old school of gold miners who did so much to open up and develop this country.
