This week’s Gazette, in dealing with the vital statistics, gives the populations of the four metropolitan areas as shown, by a preliminary count of the recent census. The figures are as lollows: AUCKLAND. City 81,7181 Remainder of metropolitan area 76,032 Total 157,750 WELLINGTON. City 88,876 Remainder of metropolitan arm 18,552 Total 107,428 CHRISTCHURCH. City 67,232 Remainder of metropolitan area 37,743 Total 104,975 DUNEDIN. City 59,798 Remainder of metropolitan area 14,339 Total 73,537 OTHER, CENTRES. The populations of the chief boroughs, with their suburban areas, are recorded as follows: Wanganui 23,529 Invercargill 19,058 Napier 16,931 Palmerston North 16,888 Timaru 15,413 Gisborne 14,521 New Plymouth .. 12,643 Nelson 10,632 During the month of May the arrivals in New Zealand exceeded the departures by 189.
