AUCKLAND, June 18 Last night the caretaker at the Safe Deposit buildings in High Street, found smoke in the lift-well and broke open the door and found a motor car ablaze. He extinguished the fire and discovered the insulation burned away. The incendiary after the starting of the fire had evidently pulled out the plugs from the main switch, throwing tho whole building into darkness, and had then locked the door and removed tho key, the object apparently lieing to simply destroy the motor car and disorganise the lighting and lift conveyance. The police are investigating. IMMIGRATION RESTRICTION LAW. GISBORNE, June 18. Captain Holm, master of the schooner Maroro, was charged at the Court to-day by tho Collector of Customs, under tho Restriction of Alien Immigratin Act, with berthing a vessel inward hound from Australia without a permit from the Customs. Evidence was l given the Harbourmaster and of several shipmasters to tho effect that, in view of threatening weather conditions, Captain Holm acted most wisely in entering port when he did.

The Magistrate held that the circumstances justified the technical offence, and entered a conviction without a fine.

GIRL DROWNED. AUCKLAND, June id

A girl named Jane Faithful, aged seven years, was drowned in Hobson tepid baths yesterday afternoon. She was swimming In the water with the aid of a pair of water wings, and it is thought that her feet heenme entangled causing her head and shoulders to sink. A little later Mrs Smith, one of the attendants, noticed her and immediately reached out from the'edge of tho baths and pulled her out. Ready assistance was given, but all efforts at resuscitation proved ineffective.
