DUNEDIN, June 8. The Dominion Conference of the Returned Soldiers’ Association opened today, Dr Boxer presiding over 30 delegates, including General Russell. The conference was formally opened by Major Douglas who offered a special welcome to General Russell. A resolution expressing the association’s congratulations to Dr Boxer on the honur conferred on him, was passed.
‘ Tlie general secretary reported that 756 monthly reports during the first year only 44 were outstanding. Forty sets of standardised hooks had been supplied to the smaller associations. The secretary reported that Mrs "Wheeler’s case had been set down for hearing on .Tunc 30, (This is' a test case to decide, whether a wife whose husband is receiving a ension is herself entitled to one). Under the entry, “Constitution and Politics.” considerable discussion took place.
The general secretary said he noticed that both "Dunedin and Auckland were concerned in the municipal elections. TTc read a reply from Auckland in which it was stated that associations which did not think its action was governed by the rule. There was a good deal of discussion as to whether Auckland had participated in party politics, and the following resolution was carried: “That in view of the various interpretitions accorded to the rule of the constitution regarding political action, it be laid down that no association give official support in any form to any candidate or candidates for public bodies whose members are returned by a poll of the general public.”
