FOUND DEAD
AVELLINGTON, June 5
The body of Joseph Tonks, a wellknown AVeUington resident, who had been missing for several days, was found hanging from a tree in the Botamicnl' Gardens early yesterday morning. Tonks, who was a married man with two little children, occupied a responsible position in the Odlin Timber and Hardware Company. He was formerly in business in the city. He had been suffering from a nervous breakdown. His business affairs were found to he quite satisfactory.
FATAL MOTOR BUS ACCIDENT
AUCKLAND. June 8
Hugh Sherson assistant traffic manager to the City Council, aged 24 years, a single man, who was injured in ;i motor bus accident, died in the hospital to-night.
NO WOMEN LICENSEES
CHRISTCHURCH, June 8
ATr AlcCarthy, S.AI., announced today that the Lyttelton Licensing Committee would in future grant no licenses to women as far as Lyttelton was concerned. There was too much rough trade there, and hotels in Lyttelton rerequired men to have charge of them.

CHRISTCHURCH, June 7
Hearing the case in which Ada Fleming is suing Dr Maurice Louisson for £1730 special and general damages, in respect of alleged negligent and unskilful treatment was continued. Defendant denied any swabs wore used in the operation. He declared the whole trouble was due to a piece of gauze dressing being inadvertently left in the wound by one of the sisters at Lewisham Hospital. The case is unfinished.

AUCKLAND, June 7
At a bloodstock sale to-day at Ellorslie, Punch ,n yearling colt by MnrtianBonnv Rigg was bought hv AV. Ryan, for 4GO guineas; and Lithfield was bought by AV. J. Emcrv fnf 320 guineas. Those wore the highest prices realised, most lots being passed in. Royal Box was passed in at 1025 guineas, and Stnrlnnd at 1000 guineas.
EIRE INSURANCE FRAUD
INVERCARGILL, June 7
Thomas George Cartwright was aequitted at the Supremo Court on a cli a rge of arson, but was found guilty of making a false declaration in a claim on an insurance company. Ho was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment.
RAILWAY CROSSING FATALITY
TIAfARU, June 7,
At an inquest into the death of tlie man killed on the railway yesterday the evidence showed that he was crossing the line at a trespass footpath cross ing in common use, being apparently oblivious to the approaching train and the driver’s whistle. The Coroner recorded that no blame was attachable to the piigine driver.
N.Z. ALLIANCE CONVENTION
CITBTSTCITFBCTT, June 8
The annual convention of the New Zealand Alliance opened to-day. Rev. W. .T. Combic presiding. TTe said they were faced with many disquietening facts. AVTicn they remembered the amount spent in liquor last year, and the increased consumption of liquor. Yet, they were undaunted and were determined to carry the fight to final vietory. ' The annual report referred to the Electoral Bolls and said that the Alliance desired to see a. roll that would bo cleansed by those who had long since ceased to exist on this earthly sphere. The Hon C, AT. Luke, AVellington, was nominated for President, for 1921.
THE COST OF LIVING
AVELLTNCTON, Juno 8". Following on the discussion at the Arbitration Court, over the decision on the bonus question, the President of the Employers’ 'Association suggested to the Trades and Labour Council the advisability of holding a conference of five delegates from each side of discuss prices and generally the ways and means of reducing the cost of living. The Trades Council will discuss this proposal to-morrow. A conference is probable this week.
