Before a small attendance, and after a hard ,fast game, the New Zealand University team defeated Sydney UniVersity by 19 points to 11. From the kick-off tb e visitors, forced the game, and after a fine rush Wiseman crossed the line, but the try was not converted. Open play in midfield followed, from which Nothling kicked a penalty goal, equalising the scores. More force f u l play by the visitors enabled Perry to cross, hut again the try was not converted. Half-time scores were: New Zealand G ,Sydney 3. On resuming Sydney attacked strongly, and frequently had the New Zealanders in trouble. Here some fine passing resulted in the Blacks scoring a try, and converting it, making the scores: Sydney 8, New Zealand 6. The visitors’ superior combination now commenced to tell, and again brought their score ahead A try by Maxwell was converted by Hartv. Sho.rtly afterwards Ward crossed the line, and Harty again kicked a goal. A few minutes before time Ward got another try, bringing the visitors’ score to 19. Sheehan then made a fine run and crossed for the home team. The game ended without further score. NEW ZEALAND BEAT QUEENSLAND. SYDNEY, June 6th.
In the presence of 25,000 spectators the New Zealand League footballers defeated Queensland by 25 points to 12. The blacks fully redeemed the promises of Saturday. The hack division worked with clock-work precision, with the vanguard effectually paving the way for openings. Tancred, McClymont and Woolley were the pick of the New Zealanders, MeClymont particularly displaying good form. Davidson drew first blood, crossing and converting, after which the Blacks over-run Queensland, tries being registered in quick succession by Waters, Avery, MeClymont. Wilson, one of which Davidson converted. Meanwhile Baton kicked a goal from a penalty.
At half-time the scores were: New Zealand 19, Queensland 2. In tbe second spell the Queenslanders for a period threw the Blacks on the defensive. Gorman completed a fine passing burst with a try, which Patou converted. The Maroons immediately returned to the attack. Play was then hovering in New Zealand’s territory for a lengthy period. Stanley added a try, which Pnton converted, *and Woolley and Williams crossed the line for New Zcnland. The New South Wales fir -i team beat New South Wales second team by 34 points to 20.
