Hislop, Ltd., of ages from the Addington Iron Rolling Mills Co., Ltd., Christchurch, the jury after four and a half hours’ retirement returned a verdict for’£3o general damages in favour of plaintiff. Judgment was entered for plaintiff for £63 8s lOd, I including £33 8s lOd special damages, j In the counter claim by defendants for goods sold and delivered, judgment was entered in their favour for £l9O 12s 3d, with court fees, £7 7s. The foreman of tho jury, in announc- j ing the verdict, asked whether it came within the province of the Court to order an investigation into the operations of the alleged “iron ring.” | His Honour said the Court had no jurisdiction.
LAUNCH ASHORE
WANGANUI, June 7
The fishing launch Nellie, while entering the port at midnight last night lost her rudder and drifted on the south mole, where she lies badly holed. Emir men of the crew got ashore without difficulty and saved fill their effects. The launch will probably be refloated.
A FIRE. PALMERSTON, X., Juno 7. A fire early this morning seriously damaged a two storeyed brick building in the Square known as Coles Ruifilings. The ground floor was occupied by Coles music shop and other portions were occupied by the Salvation Army, Repatriation Dept., Lauchlin (Jewellers), Small (Dentist), Holmes Runicles (pianoforte tutor), Miss Swanson (dressmaker), Ruffles (violin tutor), Rice (artist), Theosophieal Society. The office of the Repatriation Department was completely gutted; also Lauchlans shop situated above it. Wycherleys saddlery workshop adjoining was also damaged and the rooms and fittings of Small and the Salvation Army damaged by flames and water, and the other rooms by ter only. TASMAN ENQUIRY. AUCKLAND, June 7. Evidence at the Tasman enquiry was directed to the fact that the steamer was considerably out of her course, the Captain being of the opinion there was some unusual influence affecting the compass. Mr Meredith counsel for the Captain, suggested the influence might have lieen the Aurora Australis, which Mr Mays ridiculed, but Mr Meredith said he knew two instances where vessels found themselves in trouble during the southern lights display.
