Mr Hodges declares the miners will not accept the dictates of compulsory arbitration, preferring a voluntary a rangernent with the owners even though that deviates from their original purpose. They wanted a settlement which would leave the men with a real living wage and industry in a maximum state of efficiency. Owing to Government mishandling, the industry was bankrupt. There were some areas where official assistance should be continued till the end of the year. Government had turned down the miners ideas of a permanent peace. Tt was up to Government to provide alternative proposals. ' IN THE COMMONS. (Received this day at 12.30 p.nO LONDON, May 30. In the Commons, Hon Lloyd George denied telling the Miners Executive that legislation would l>e passed compelling the miners to submit the dispute to arbitration, if they did not accept the Government’s proposed method of settle ment. EXECUTIVE’S ADVICE. LONDON, May 30. The executives of South Wales and Scotland Miners Association advised members to reject the Government’s proposals. Mass meetings of Lanarkshire, and Forest of Deane miners voted for rejection of the terms.
