BOBBERY IN SYDNEY

CHRISTCHURCH LADY THE VICTIM.

SYDNEY, May 13. One of the biggest robberies reported from Darlinghurst for some time was committed in Woolcott street last night when costumes, .hats, underclothing, and hoots to the value of about £2OO were taken away in two suit eases.

Mrs Hortense O’Rrien. a widow from Christchurch, New Zealand, is the loser of the property, and the scene of the robbery was her flat in Kew Lodge. Nos. 22 and 24.

The apartments were first occupied by Mrs O’Brien only a week ago. She arrived from New Zealand in February, and brought with her several trunks of valuable dresses.

The robbery was committed between 8 o’clock and 11. As soon as Mrs O’Brien, whose flat is on the ground floor and not far from the front door, discovered that thieves had visited her apartments she informed the Darlinghurst police. Inspector Robertson and Constable Dimmock went to the Louse and found the bedroom in a disordered state.

They learned from Airs O’Brien that she left her rooms a few minutes before 8 o’clock to go to a picture show. The police have no doubt that she was watched by the thieves, who have been frequenting this locality n great deal during the past few months. In fact, it was from a house in Woolcott street that some of the desperate members of Urn Melbourne vendetta gang were cleared out some months ago. How-

ever, the thieves, satisfied that no one was in the flat, went along Penny’s lane, which runs from Woolcott street to Bayswater road, and, turning into Goderich lane, entered the back gate leading to Kew Lodge and Medina Hall noxt door. Hero they entered Kew

Lodge, and got into Mrs O’Rrion’s room by means of a ladder. The thieves were probably in the room for over an hour, for they ransacked drawers and trunks and left Mrs O’Brien with very little extra wearing apparel. There are several tenants in the flats, hut none of them saw any suspicious characters about.
