The weddng took place at St Canice’s Church, Westport on Wednesday of Mary Ryan, eldest daughter of Miami Mrs J. Ryan Derby street, to Mr j w. Kelly, foreman fitter of the Borough Council gas and water staff. Father Bowe officiated. Mr Ryam, senr. gave the bride away, and Air' Ryan jnr., acted in the capacity of best man. The bride looked charming being dressed in a lovely cream crepe-de-c-hipe dress trimmed with silver and -arried a long court train. She carried a beautiful bouquet of chrysanthemums. Miss Dena Ryan attended the nride as bridesmaid. Master Duncan Stewart acted as page boy. and held the bride’s train. After the ceremony the many guests were entertained at tlie esidence of the bride's parents The happy couple were photographed at Rose’s studio prior to their departure for Reefton by special care. In response to the request from the Westland County Council to.keep Kaniori bridge open for light two-wheel traffic, the Resident Engineer at Grevmoutli, has replied as follows: —“In reply to yours of May 25th re dosing Kanieri bridge, I regret I cannot advise your Council to keep the bridge open foi light two-wb.eel traffic. As you are aware, though notices have been posted on the bridge for some time past, it has been found impossible to prevent heavy traffic using it. I expect shortly to receive instructions to proceed with the necessary repairs, and these, being failly extensive, will necessitate the closing of the bridge ill any case foi some little time.”
At Addington stock sales on Wednesday there was a medium entry and a good demand for baeoners. Porkers were in over-supply. Values were: — Choppers £3 to £S 10s, baeoners £4 10s to ,C 4 15s, heavy baeoners £5 to £5 12s, extra heavy baeoners to £O, average price per lb 7d to 7Jd, porkers 45s to 555, heavy porkers 60s to 70s, average price per lb 9d to 9‘d. A better demand existed for store pigs, the entry was smaller, and no large pigs were offered. Prices for medium-si,zed pigs were in the vicinity of 5s per head better. Values were as follows: —Medium stores 32s to 40s, small stores IBs to 30s, good weaners 13s to 16s- small weaners 8s to 12s 6d.
Good progress was yesterday made on the Otira Gorge in clearing the slip of Thursday morning and the coaches were enabled to get across from either side with mails and passengers. East night the express making a good run down arrived in Greymouth at the usual time from Otira with Thursday’s mails and almost 60 passengers. On Thursday night several passengers fbr the other side stayed at Otira, and went across the Gorge yesterday, but very few remained at Arthur’s [’ass and came on here yesterday. The effect of the slip has served as an (lustration of the growing importance and interest in the traffic over the Otira route nowadays. Two more passengers vesteday came over through the tunnel co Otira and on to Grey. Hokitika mails came through this morning.
At a meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council on Thursday evening, Mr T.le. Y. Seddon M.l\ wired stating that th 0 Hon C. J. Anderson (Minister of Mines) will arrive in Greymouth on Juno 2nd, will visit Hokitika, on June 3t<d and return to Greymouth on June 4th. Mr Sod-lon asked for a list of Borough deputations. Cr. Colclough wanted to know why the Minister was going to Hokitika first, and on a holiday ; why did he not come to Greymouth first, instead of going to a “country village”? The Mayor: “We cannot control the Minister’s movements Cr Colclough.” Continuing, Iq. stated they would no doubt find many matters to bring before the Minister. The Chamber of Commerce intended to interview him regarding the opening up of a road to the new goldfield at Alexander River. Between that time and the Minister’s arrival he would b 0 glad if Councillors would co-operate with him and do their best to help tho town and district along. This was a mining district, and there were many matters they could bring before tin; Minister of Mines. He was sure they would cooperate with other local bodies in the matter.
