The total amount of income tax received by the Commonwealth for 1920 exceeded £12.000.000 against £10,000,000 in 1919, and £7,000,000 in 1918. The Land tax amounted to £2,000.000 slightly less than the previous years.
AUSTRALIAN ITEMS. MELBOURNE, May 26. The total amount of income tax received by the Commonwealth in 1920. exceeded' £12,000,000 against £10,000,000 in* 1919, and £7,000,000 in 1918. The land tax amounted to £2,000,000 which was slightly less than the pievious year’s. The Coroner has committed the man Pimental (a cinema manager, whose arrest was cabled on April 18th). for trial on the charge of maliciously setting fire to Nunan’s buildings, and for the wilful murder of the young woman, Gertrude Rley, who'gave an alarm and lost her life. Bail was refused SYDNEY, May 26. In future a duty of one penny per pound will he levied on Fiji bananas, which formerly paid 2/6 per hundred pounds. It is feared in some quarters the new duty wll not only kill the import of 'bananas, but cause a deflection of much of the present Australian export trade to Fiji over to New Zealand and America.
