STEAD’S

The May 1-ltli. issue of Stead’s (9d.) contains some exceedingly interesting articles. A good deal oi space is devoted to the Gorman indemnity, the editor asking whether it “will ruin or save us.” He gives some informative particulars concerning the effect on Germany of the payment of the French indemnity after the Franco-German war and uses the example of the surrender of the German ships to show how a country may actually he mote hurt than helped by siiclt gifts. These 2,000,000 tons of German shipping have absolutely knocked the bottom out of the shipbuilding industry in Great Britain, and have made thousands workless. In discussing whether the AngloJapancse Treaty should he renewed, the Editor gives the ease for and against. He reprints the Prime Minister’s statement in Parliament as being the strongest ease in favour of renewal, and publishes an article bv John A .Brailsfoul against continuing the alliance. Ihe latter points out that the matter has never been before the electors, and that very few people realise it is actually a military treaty, not merely ail entente cordiale. He makes out n very good case against renewal. In his Progress. Mr Stead denis with the European situation, and, writing on May 7th, just after the German Government had resigned, prophesied that a new Government would be created, which would accept the latest Allied demands, but which was unlikely to remain long in office. He again refers to the question of mental hospitals in Australia, and comments severely on the finding of Justice .Street, in the case of Mrs Fan - . Samuel Turner, the well-known mountaineer, is the subject of a short character sketch, under the title “A Mountain Maniac.” The usual features are as interesting and informative as over.
