BRITISH LABOUR CRISIS.
BY TELEGRA.m —PRESS ASSN., COPYRIGHT. COAL SETTLEMENT HITCH. (Received this day at 8 u.m./ LONDON, May 23. A new difficulty has arisen that is likely to delay a settlement of the strike. The owners and Government require an assurance that the pool is abandoned. The miners, however, are only prepared to depart from the pool on an understanding that a new plan for dealing with coal mines as a national unit is produced as an alternative. No plan providing for a standard wage for all mine workers has been accepted by the owners or agreed upon in principle by Government. UNOFFICIAL OVERTURES. LONDON, May 23.
The coal strike butlook is described as hopeful, as the miners’ leaders are indulging in friendly conversations with unofficial 0 mine owners, who desire to reach a settlement.
The chief basis of optimism is a belief that the miners are willing to drop the demand for a national pool. Several important unions have intimaier that they cannot longer support the miners as funds are running out, and they cannot pay their own unemployed members. Meanwhile the public is submitting almost without complain, to further restrictions on travel, fuel and light .supplies.
