SCHOOL WAR MEMORIAL
COMMITTEE MEETING
A meeting of the general committee in rsepect to the above was held at the County Chambers last evening. Present: Mr W. H. Shannon (chair.), Miss M. Wilson, Messrs Richards, Irvine, King, Aitken, Stevenson, Seebeck and Evans.
The Chairman reported that the masonic fraternity would undertake the official part in connection with thelaying of the foundation stone on the afternoon of June 3rd. Tile principal officers of the English and New Zealand constitutions would participate, and members of the ( various _ lodges would' he -present. The stone would be laid with due and fitting c eremony jointly by R, W. Bros. Steer and Wames of Grcymomh. R. W. Bro Michel of Hokitika had been invited by Grand lodge officers to deliver the Masonic oration. Other members of the craft to speak would be' R-. A\. Bros. Cochrane and Richmond of Greymouth. In addition the Hon. Minister of Alines would he present, and would -oak on behalf of the Government. Mr Scddon would speak on behalf of the electorate, the Hon. J. Grimmond M.L.C. would be asked to speak on behalf of the Canterbury Education Hoard, his AVorshp the Mayor (Mr G. V. Perry) on behalf of the town and the ex-scholars, and the County Chairman for the country districts. These arrangements were generally approved and it was resolved to have the ground prepared, a platform erected and ornamented with hunting. The school children will he massed at the discretion of the Rector at points where they will'obain a full view of the ceremony, and in this connection seats in tiers will he provided if possible. It was resolved to invite the band to be present, and also the cadets to parade as a guard of honour. The masonic procession will he from the lodge room, lower Revell Street and will move via Revell, Stafford, Hall and Hampden Streets to the school grounds. It was decided to arrange for an excursion train from Greymouth as about 200 members of the craft are expected from the north. This train will be fixed to run at suitable hours, to and from Hokitika. It was resolved to ask that the outward departure of the Ross train he delayed an hour on the Friday afternoon. It was resolved to ask the wives of the school committee members and the teachers to arrange few afternoon tea to lie provided for the visitors in the technical school room after the ceremonial.
A collection will be taken up at the ceremony and the Rector was asked to arrange for High School girls to undertake this duty.
It was reported the present was collecting week ill Hokitika, and lists had been forwarded to all the local collectors. Lists were also being dispatched to the country districts, and circulars were being addressed to ex-scholars in other parts of the Dominion. Air Seebeck was appointed assistant secretary. Various detail matters were attended to and the meeting adjourned sine die.
