In response to an application the Government, through the Hon Minister of Customs (Hon W. Downie Stewart> has refused to remit the duty on the Westland war memorial shortly to he imported into the country. On former
occasions in connection with monuments and memorials of a public nature, the concession had been made. The concession was made in different instances too, though the Government contributed a moiety of the cost of the othei me morinls; hut in tlie present instance no subsidy is being granted by the Government.' Probably the present attitude is attributable to the financial stringency.

Instances of children hi caking bounds and crowding round the Prince ot Wales occurred several times during the tour
, his Royal Highness throughout New Zealand. Something of the same kind occurred at Auckland on Tuesday evening, when the Governor-General and
dv Jellieoe w#re leaving the gathering of .young people in the Town Hall, organised by the Young Citizens’ League. The children on the ground floor had been asked to remain in their places until the Vice-Regal party had gone, but the enthusiasm for a number proved too much for them, and they leit their seats to crowd round as the party proceeded through the hall. Their Exec' lenoies, entering fully into the spirit ol the incident, shook hands with as many of the children as they could roach.
The slump in ssi\vmillin«x is beginning to rear its head locally. Out* mill has closed down pro tern, and a similar course has been suggested to another mill adjacent to Hokitika. Orders are very lestrieted now, and the larger concerns are feeling the pinch. In Canterbury last week it was not possible to place a small shipment of West Const timber, and the timber laid to be stored unsold in a local yard. Kawmillers are meeting at Grevmmith to-day to consider the position, and a proposal will be put forward to “pool” orders, so as to keep as many mills going as possible. As the Australian trade lias fallen ofl as well as the Dominion orders, the outlook does not give promise of much elasticity in the immediate future, and naturally millowners are much perturbed at the situation.
At the loyal demonstration at Sydney one of the speakers—he had been a bombardier in the Australian artillery in France —was jocular about his new position as a Domain orator. “Aon people,” he said, “don l often come down to the Domain, because it is not necessary. You are all too decent. (Laughter.) ' You came down to-day though because you found it necessary to do a hit of disinfecting.” (More laughter.) Deferring to the usual uses of the Domain, lie said that every house must have its <lirt-hox and every municipality its rubbish tip. (Applause and laughter.) There was no sectarianism about that meeting. It was simply to show their natuyal love of the flag under which they were horn. “If there are people who don’t like the Hag under which they were born they should be damn well shoved out. (Cheers). We will collect the money to pay their fares, and it can’t get any seamen we will work the boat.” (Loud applause.) A voice: “That’s the stuff.” A lady’s voice: “Hand them over to the women to deal with.” (Laughter.) Continuing, the bombardier said that the red-raggers infused to go to the war, and bad acted like skunks. Now they insulted the flag for which comrades had given their blood.
