Twenty-seven vessels have left Liverpool since the strike be- ! gnu on May 6th. The stewards shipped 1 are mostly volunteers, but an increasI ing number of unionists are offering'.- ! Speakers at a mass meeting of ste : wards in Liverpool admitted that the ! older Unionists were accepting the ship- . owners’ terms. The “Morning Post” states: lhe strike is practically broken. GOVERNMENT WISH. MINERS TO DROP POOL. LONDON, May 18. i The “Central News” states: The j Government has suggested that the ’ miners should drop their pooling pro- ! posal. The Government are prepared 1 to put any scheme involving a method 1 which would compel the richer proper--1 ties to support the poorer, before an . impartial tribunal. ! The miners are also invited by the 1 Ministry to consider a new wages | scheme‘based on the principal governing the recent railway agreement. Tins would involve the establishment of a mining national wages board, a group of mining areas, and a consequent setI ting up of group councils of owners and miners for each area. 1 The Government expect the miners to agree to the application of a sliding scale" of wages of increases and reductions, leaving it to a Central Board to make adjustments.
! TALK OF MINERS GIVING IN. • * LONDON, May 19. It is hoped that to-day’s observations following the miners’ leaders inclination to relax their demand for a national wage pool will enable Mi' . Lloyd George to summon a new con-, ference for the weekend. It is significant that the Premier is cancelling engagements, and will remain in London. The Railwnymen and Transporters executives however, have reaffirmed their decision not to handle non-"pion coal.
