In addition to the mining operations now proceeding at the Thames, where several companies are working ground on the western and eastern sides of the Mnnnatninri slide, n number of prospectors are busy on the field. The hope is entertained that the efforts of the latter may lead to the location of further deposits of gold in the various reef systems traversing the hills. There are evidences that, should any of the prospecting and development propositions now in hand lead to encouraging results. a revival in the mining industiy would follow. Special interest would attach to any discovery of value on the hill ward side of the slide, but an essential would be that auriferous lodes unearthed should he of an extensive nature, such as would pay to open out

The Seattle Chamber of Commerce states that “at the present time millions oh feet of lumber are moving to the Far East, Australia, Atlantic Coast, South America and Europe.” Cargo from Seattle of the Central Steamship Corporation’s stbamer has Vegas included 1,000,000 feet of lumber and 100,000 feet of railway ties for Australia. At San Pedro this vessel was to load a quantity of petroleum products for Sydney and Melbourne, and the steamer Du Clay was to begin loading lumber and general merchandise for Australia and New Zealand. The new States of Europe, helped by exchange fates, are said, in a report from London, to be dumping timber into England at prices with which Scandinavia and Canada cannot hope to compete.
In the matter of the secession of the East Tumaki dairy farmers from the New Dairy Company, Ltd., writes a correspondent of the Auckland “Star,” 1 was surprised to read in the "Star” that it had been decided to erect a skimming station in preference to a cheese tactory. As a matter of fact, cheese prices in the London markets have, for many years, been better than butter rates. At present London prices, New Zealand factory suppliers would receive about Is 7d to Is Nil per 1!) butter fat, while cheese factory suppliers would receive 2s 9(1 to Lbs K)d. Of course, it is quite possible that neither of these rates will be receivable next season, but for various reasons it is iairly certain that, as usual, cheese will beat butter as a payable proposition. One fact that has been proved, is that-whether times in England are good or bad, cheese prices hold better than those for butter. Factories that manufacture cheese and whey butter, always pay out better prices to suppliers than the butter companies have vet been able to do.
