SCULLING.

ARNST AND HANNAN’S TRAINING

[by TELEGRAPH—PER PRESS ASSOCIATION]

BLENHEIM, May 18

The rivals for the world’s sculling championship are hard at work on land and water. Hannan daily climbs the withered hills and tramps many miles along the skyline. He contents himself, however, with one long row daily, but occasionally he had been out twice on fine days. Hannan gets tremendous pace out of his boat, and seemingly with little effort. His leg work is

perfect. He adds a fine body swing, and the boat fairly jumps along when liis weight is on. Hannan is working in two boats, built by Towns and Neilson respectively. The champion’s boat and sculls, like himelf are massive. His sculls arc 7 inches in width, against Hannan’s six and a quarter inches, whilst his boat is two feet longer, and has proportion-

ately a greater beam. Arnst’s boat was specially made for this' race bv Peter Kemp. Arnst is g nearly down to racing weight. He recently cycled 10 miles up the Wairau Valley, and, after walking the hills for four hours cycled home again fresh. He puts terrific power into his strokes and his boat fairlv flies. His leg work does not show up so well as Hannan’s. At times lie slides half-way home before his sculls strike the water, hut his great body swing and bard finish more than atone for these deficiencies. The champion is very pleased with the course.
