Aurora Australis.
WHAT CAUSES DISTURBANCE? AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. LONDON, May 17. The “Times” states astronomers differ regarding the present world-wide magnetic disturbances. Prominent French authorities expiess the opinion that they are due to a gigantic storm on the surface of the sun. The sun consequently is emitting most powerful Hertzian waves. Uiej are acting upon the earth’s magnetic forces. Sir' Oliver Lodge considers it more likely that the dsturbances are the, result of a torrent of electrified particles giving off a gigantic electric current. Sir Olliver Lodge forecasts vigorous weather and increased light. The Greenwich authorities are undecided whether to blame the disturbances on to sunspots or to more obscure solar disturbances. A remarkable feature noted is that while the cables, telegraphs, and telephones are affected, the wireless is not reported to be disturbed. It is probable that some of the Atlantic cables may have to he lifted for repairs.
