AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. RISE IN WAGES. SYDNEY, May 17. A meeting of members of the Sydiryy branch of the Seamen’s Union accepted the shipowners’ offer of an advance of 10s per month in wages. The other branches still have to vote on the proposal . The numerical strength of Sydney s voting makes its decision important. SATURDAY WORK. SYDNEY, May 17. The Master Builders’ Association Ins decided to fight the employees on tin question of Saturday work, informing the latter they need not appear on Mondays if absent on Saturdays The Carpenters’ Union has reaffirmed its decision not to work on Saturdays.
DR. MANNIX. SYDNEY, May 17. The question as to whether Archbishop Mnnnix should he allowed to land in Australia is being widely discussed. There is a very strong feeling reported in some quarters against permission to land being granted to Tv. Mnnnix. This is stated to be in mew of his recent utterances. It is suggested that he should he treated similarly to Mr Grattan Esmonde, who was obliged to remain on Iris ship. STATE ENTERPRISE. SYDNEY, May 17. The Government Savings Rank has arranged to conduct a new Rural Rank business in 40 country centres. Fifty four other centres will be also opened next month.
The Government is also opening State butchers’ shops, to tesnt the- question whether the present high retail prices of meat are warranted in view of the fall in stock values.
