1,200 ARRESTS. ATHENS, March 6. Greece has a short way with strikers • During a mass meeting of railway strikers at the Municipal Theatre, I iraeus (the port near Athens), troops dosed the doors and arrested them all. They were promptly enrolled in the Army and put into uniform. Five hundred were put in a steamer and sent off to the Smyrna front. The remaining 750 were sent for duty with the Corps of Engineers. Many then desired to return to their civilian work but were told it was now, too late. Provincial strikers are being similarly dealt with. SHOTS AT A JUDGE.
DISBON, March 16. Another attempt was made to assassinate Dr. Ferreira de Sousa, judge of the Tribunal of Social Defence, when he entered his home after midnight. His life was saved by a fountain pen. Two bullets struck his hand and his ear. A third pierced a pocket book in the breast pocket and was deflected by a fountain pen, falling harmlessly into the pocket. The criminal, who is supposed to belong to the Young Syndicalists’ Association escaped. This is the fourth recent assault on judges of the Social Defence tribunal.
