SOUTH WESTLAND NOTES.

(From an Occasional Correspondent), One cannot but admire, or let pass unnoticed the brilliant achievement of Drs. Baird and Buchanan in their iecent race from Hokitika to Okurti (some 201) miles) to endeavour to save a human life. Such an unparalleled rapid journey is deserving of every commendation. Nothing short of fellow feeling and a keen sense of duty could have promoted such an achievement as theirs. Over 200 miles in 34 hours with conditions and obstacles such as these men encountered is nothing short of a record. Considering that these men had not ridden a horse for years and seeing that tho latter part of their journey (over 100 miles) had to be traversed on horseback speaks well for their determination and indefatigable energy.

Fording innumerable streams and groping their way in the darkness (at some stages), without sleep or rest, they continued unflinchingly on their urgent mission. Men that can do actions like these are men that the whole of ’Westland should feel proud of. U should cast a feeling of security through out the length and breadth of Westland to know that we have such men in our midst. The assistance given to the doctors by tho settlers en route should not pass unnoticed—horses and guides were available at every stage clearly demonstrating the fellow feeling and brotherly love for which Westlanders are characteristic.
