LONDON, May 13. j Heavy rain fell in the night and the j wicket was drenched, and the start de- . layed till 1.35 p.m. A section of the ' crowd! made an angry demonstration against the delay and demanded a return of their money. The attendance was five thousand. The weather was bad, but turned sunny when play started. The wicket was soit and dillicult. Play was slow and it took seventy-five minutes to dispose of the remaining two Yorkshire wickets. Robinson displayed watchful batting. Two bundled appered after 317 minutes, lhe ninth wicket fell at 208, and Hendry secured the last at 224.
LONDON, May 13 . The Australians forced the pace and rattled up 77, despite quick bowling changes. The ball was chopping up the wickets and a piece of turf flew into Ryder’s eye causing a delay. He was dismissed at 15 by a spectacular piece of work, Waddington turning a somersault in making a difficult catch. Bardsloy was taken at mid on, the second wicket falling at 57. Andrews had three escapes of being caught. Taking advantage of Rhodes and MaCaulaj s failure to maintain a good length he indulged in hard hitting and driving. AIR FORCE. LONDON, May 14. The Australians commenced the match against the navy, army, and air force team in the fine weather at Portsmouth.
Armstrong won the toss, and Collinand Bardsley opened batting on a fast wicket. The former, going for the bowling, scored at the rate of a run a minute. Bardsley was playing carefully. A century was hoisted in 66 minut's Then Collins stepped in front to oni from Cnrbutt. He bad one sixer c>d seven fourers. Macartney took his place and despite bowfing changes the score advanced rapidly. After compiling 51, including 10 fours in 47 minutes. Macartney \v,.< replaced by Taylor who with the score at three for 252 was dismissed. Armstrong was next in, and th n Bardsley was applauded when he completed his century. After batting for 215 minutes and scoring 11 fours hwas bowled for 132. Pellew took his place, but did n)b last long. Gregory came in next and was batting when stumps were drawn. Hobbs possibly, will not be fit to play in the second test match. Heartio is not likely to play throughout the season. His health is very disquieting. Tho selectors of the test team art faced with a difficult task, the early date of the first test match not permitting sufficient guidance regarding the form of the players. The first test team is regarded as tentative unless England does specially well at Nottingham.
