AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. A STRIKE FRACAS. NEW YORK, May 12. Telegrams from Williamson, in Virvinia, report that violent guerilla warfare has broken out in the mining county of Mingo, on th Kentucky border. There the miners are on strike. They are firing from mountains oil five small towns, the inhabitants of which are panic stricken, and many have fled. Several have been killed and wounded. The State Governor has- urgently :e quested that Federal troops be sent .1 > quell disorder, which is the outcome of a feud against prohibition agents
U.S. AND DISARMAMENT. WASHINGTON, May 12. Senator King, in opening in thr Senate a fight'on the motion in favour of naval disarmament steps, declared that ..the United States Naval Department was reactionary and blind, and had learned nothing from the World War. Senator King predicted that, tin present leadership would lead to disaster and ruin.
EXCHANGE. RISE IN STERLING BILLS. NEW YORK, May 12. The demand for sterling bills on Lon r don has to-day reached four dollars. This is the highest for twelve months. The money market is further stimulated by the German acceptance of the ultimatum. French and Belgian francs also made a gain on exchange overnight of 20 points. This is the highest since the armistice. Guilders, marks, and the Scandinavian exchange rates are also up. THE SHIPPING STRIKE. (Received This Day at 8.30 a.m.) . NEW YORK, May 13 Marine strikers failed to prevent nine vessels leaving port during the last twenty-four hours, apart from numerous British ships which are suffering no inconvenience. United States Shipping Board has taken drastic measures against certain firms which agreed to the strikers terms, by taking them from vessels to whioh the board holds the title.
